English Society of Lampung University will compete in IDEA debate, Palembang. Idea debate is holding by State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya which invite some debater from all over Sumatera regional. Idea debate will be held on December 2-6th 2011. In this competition, English Society will send 3 teams to compete and grab the winner. A year ago, we were successfully grab second winner in this competition, besides that we also brought best speakers. In this year, we believe that we will be taking over all achievements in this competition. wish we luck!

At the first beginning, E-Fest (ESo Festival) was only a dream of our English Society (ESo) of Lampung University. However ESoers were trying hard to make it realized. We believe, when there is a will, there is the way. Thus, in 2009 E-Fest was born with 5 branches of competitions namely Debate, Speech, Scrabble, News Casting and Story Telling. That was aimed for students in Lampung scoped only.

Then in 2010, we held E-Fest 2010 for the second time for Lampung region still. Later, we realized that students from other institutions outside Lampung demanded E-Fest to be a nationwide English competition so everyone in the country has the same chance to participate regardless where they were from. Regarding that consideration, we welcomed some institutions outside Lampung to also join E-Fest. In the end, general trophy came to Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) because they grabbed the general winner.

So, who is next? What institution is going to get general trophy this year?

Here is the thing. We're gonna have two general trophies this year; Lampung Governor's Trophy for Varsity category, and Rector's Trophy for Senior High School category.

So, here we go...

This year, we proudly present a prestigious competition “Nationwide E-Fest 2011” that will be held on October, 13^th-17^th 2011. We would like to hold a national competition in national level, with six branches of competition namely: BP Debate, Scrabble, Speech, Story Telling, News Casting, and Wall Magazine.

Now, it is time for you to get our general trophy! Let’s have a nice and prestigious competition with us! Don’t miss it!! ^-^

Here is some brief information for each of the branch of competitions:

1. DEBATE

It is purposed for varsity (general) and senior high school category. The format of this debate is British Parliamentary System with 8 rounds consist of 5 preliminary rounds, quarter-final round, semi-final round, and grand final round. All motions from preliminary round until grand final round will be impromptu.

There will be no separation for all team in preliminary round then in the next round till grand final round, we would like to divide you into senior high school category and varsity category (general came into varsity category). So, we will have the winner from each category, senior high school and varsities.

So we are really waiting for you to join this competition, be the winner, and GLORIFY YOUR PATH AS THE CHAMPION.

2. SPEECH

There will be 5 rounds in speech contest Nationwide E-Fest 2011. It consists of 2 preliminary rounds, quarter final round, semi final round, and final round which consist of full-preparation speech and impromptu speech.

There will be 60 participants only for speech contest Nationwide E-Fest 2011. They will compete in two preliminary rounds. The adjudicators will decide top 12 participants who will compete for the next quarter final round. For the semi final round, there are only 6 participants who will fight to compete in final rounds and be the 3 champions.

We will provide you some hot theme for your speech. And it will be great if you keep in touch with several issues which happened recently.

3. STORY TELLING

Story Telling competition is an individual competition where the participants show their creativity in visualizing any stories to the audiences in attractive and unique ways within a predetermined time. In this competition, each participant should show their abilities in telling a story and expressing the story within or without preparation. Moreover, participants will deliver a story and demonstrate it in accordance with the character contained in the stories with their own style. The participants are free to explore and discover ways to make the story become more interesting. Improvisation, imagination, originality, creativity and attractiveness of the delivery of the stories are the main focus in this competition.

Strongly hope that the story telling competition is able to develop your speaking skills, building your confidence, developing creativity, self-expression in telling a story and entertaining the audience. Story telling can encourage people to explore their unique expressiveness and can heighten ability to communicate thoughts and feelings in an articulate, lucid manner.

In short, joining this competition is definitely the solution to get the purposes of story telling. We invite you to be dared as a story teller and be the champion. Feel challenged?

General

Nationwide English Society Festival 2011 story telling competition will be held in 3 days for 4 rounds; preliminary, quarter final, semi final and final.
Preliminary round is the first round where every registered participant competes. Preliminary round consist of two rounds, the first preliminary round and the second preliminary round.
Quarter Final round is the second round where only twelve participants with the highest score from preliminary round compete for quarter final round.
Semi Final round is the third round where only six participants with the highest score and the best performance from quarter final round compete for semi final round.
Final round is the last round where only three participants with the greatest performance and the highest score from semi final round compete for being a champion.
Every rule and regulation must be followed by the participants. Disqualification is necessary for the participant who violates the rule.

Rounds

The First Preliminary Round: This round, all participants are required to prepare their story at home. Theme of story is “Superstar Life Journey”. The participants are allowed to bring their own properties to make the story become more interesting. Each participant must submit three copies of the script at to the committee before the competition starts. Each participant gets maximum 7 minutes to perform their story.

The Second Preliminary Round: In this round, we will prepare some properties. There will be about 15 properties and the participants will get 3 properties randomly by taking lottery from the committee. The participants are required to use all those three properties in their story and cannot use other than what we have prepared. The genre of the story will no be determined and it is all up to their creativity.

All the participants will initially be in the quarantine room. In this room, participants will not know the properties that they will get. The participants will see the properties that must use and start typing the script for the second preliminary in the preparation room. After that, each participant will be called to perform in front of the judges for 5 minutes.

Quarter Final Round: For this round, we will provide one paragraph of the story and the participants must continue that story by their imagination and creativity. All quarter finalists in this round will get different story and they are demanded to make the story being so different and interesting.

Semi Final Round: The general concept of this round is to make a story based on the song. Participant will be given the lyric of the song and will hear the song for 1 time. Then they will have to explore the ways of delivering the story based on the song they have heard. There will be no properties allowed in this round. To make the judges easier to judge, they will also be given the lyrics and hear the song before the competition begin. In this round, they have 5 minutes to hear of the song and 10 minutes to explore ways of telling a story and preparation. Each participant has 10 minutes to perform their story.

Final Round: The final round will be in the form of role play story where there is an involvement from some other neutral people in running the story. The committee in this story, will set up the scenarios and pretend to be the actors in the story. There will be some properties prepared by the committee to assist finalists to run the story. What the finalists need to do is to create a story based on the scenarios performed by the committee and pretend to be one of the actors in the story. The finalists also need to use the properties to help them create a story idea. This is the most challenging round that it demand the creativity to create a story idea with no preparation.

4. NEWS CASTING

Telling an entire nation what's important and happening day in and day out sounds like a prestigious position. But being a professional and great news caster requires a lot of hard work and competition.
News casting is a competition which develop your skill in reading, presenting, and interviewing. All of skills that developed in News casting, relate to public communication in which you as the anchors inform the latest news around the world and educate people. Communication skills, intelligence, general knowledge, not to mention your spontaneity are the key performance for every newscaster. It is the way that will bring you into the journalism world and begin your debut. Experiencing in News casting competition will make you learn more.

The more you practice, the better result you will get. The more you experience in competition, the more lesson you will learn.

Rounds

There will be 5 rounds in the News casting Competition of Nationwide English Society Festival.

The first Preliminary Round: There will be 60 participants. Each participant will present a news in 5 minutes.

The second Preliminary Round: The number of participants will be 60. Each participant will have live report in 5 minutes.

Quarterfinal round: There will be 12 finalists. Each finalist will present a news and weather forecast in total 5 minutes.

Semifinal round: There will be six finalists who get best score in the quarter Round will go to the semifinal round. Here, The participants will be paired into 3 teams (1 team consists of 2 persons). Each team has to present the news in 10 minutes.

Grandfinal Round: There will be 3 finalists here. Each participants will interview a guest star in 12 minutes.

5. WALL MAGAZINE

“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world” -dad poets-

“It’s amazing that amount of the news that happen in the world every day always just exactly fits the newspaper” -Jerry Seinfeld-

Wise words say how powerful the words to change the world. With words people can say many things, expressing the ideas, and People will not say much when they don’t have ideas because words have a power to make people aware what you say is meaningful. World speak up what happen in the world by powerful words through news. Starting from happy to write things that are simple, not impossible for someone to be more open-minded to further develop your pleasure in the field of authorship in a more professional.

Readers will get a distribution associated with desire, aspiration, love, longing, concern, and various other thoughts that cannot be channeled his own. Wall magazine aspirations can be cast away to readers who have written to others, and become a means of joint authorship to argue about something, wishes, comments, banter, criticize, and still many others.

As a young child who is sensitive to their surroundings, with a view of the fact that in this life always raises the question, then wall magazine will be encouraged to give birth in order to release or article
spilling all kinds of ideas and thoughts.

If the world could remain within a frame like a painting on a wall, then I think we’d see the beauty there and stand staring in awe. By inspiration, let creativity flow through your word and start make the wall magazine.

Rounds

There will be five rounds in Wall Magazine competition. It consists of 1^st preliminary, 2^nd preliminary, quarter round, semifinal round, and final round. We have maximum 45 teams and for each team consist of two participants.

In the first preliminary round, each group makes 2D Wall Magazine that we provide a month before competition for their wall-magazine. (???)

In the second preliminary, the teams have just have to present about their wall magazine within 10 minutes.

There will be only 12 teams in quarterfinal round that are going to do the theme-based wall magazine prepared by the committee. The teams will make a 3D wall magazine within two hours, including the preparation time.

In semifinal round, big six teams will be selected for final round. Here, there will be theme-free wall magazine by utilizing recycle material.

Eventually, three best teams are going to compete for the champion position. We have amazing theme and we play with your own creativity. And also we provide main material for this special round.

Scoring criterion:

· Creativity: 30%

· Material: 30%

· Content: 25%

· Teamwork: 15%

6. SCRABBLE

In this competition, we will have the Collins Scrabble system.

In an English-language set the game contains 100 tiles, 98 of which are marked with a letter and a point value ranging from 1 to 10. The number of points of each lettered tile is based on the letter's frequency in standard English writing; commonly used letters such as E or O are worth one point, while less common letters score higher, with Q and Z each worth 10 points. The game also has two blank tiles that are unmarked and carry no point value. The blank tiles can be used as substitutes for any letter; once laid on the board, however, the choice is fixed. Other language sets use different letter set distributions with different point values. If a player uses all seven of the tiles in the rack in a single play, a bonus of 50 points is added to the score of that play, these bonus points are added after totaling the score for that turn.

Competition Format :

There are 5 competition phases : preliminary round , octo final round , quarter final round , semi final round and grand final round.

1. Preliminary round

preliminary round 1 the first phase consist of 4 matches. There will be 128 teams competing one another with Australian match drawing system ( no repetition with the same opponent).

2. Octo final round

each participant who breaks to octo final will face their opponent according to the drawing in the grouping match. Participant will play 3 matches in each group. The winner will be determined by accumulation of victory points from both games. If they share the same victory point , then the winner will be determined by the highest total spread of the 3 games.

3. Quarter final round

the same as octo, 4 teams with the highest margin from both matches will break to the semi final round.

4. Semifinal round

four semifinalist will compete one another with king of the hill drawing system ( which allows repetition with the same opponent). 2 teams with the highest victory points from both semi final round will break to the grand final round

5. Grand final

finally both grand finalist will meet each other in this grand final round and we will determine the champion and the 1st runner up.

6. Final round

For both semi finalist who failed to break to the grand final round , they will be compete in this round to determine the 2nd runner up.

Rules :

1. All participants must show their identity tag given by the commitee when entering the comp. Room.

2. During the game, players aren’t allowed to :

-open any kind of dictionary , books , handphone , or other reading materials

-distract other player's attention in any way

- leave the location of the game by any cause,unless permitted by the regulator

3. After the game all players must sign the result sheet, as to agree the final score. Once the score sheet is signed, no objection can be made.

4. If a team win because of his/her opponent's lateness, the margin of the winner will be +150 and 1vp,if both player dont come both got 0vp and -150 margin

5. in each match, a winning team will get 1 vp,while the defeated team will get 0 vp

6. margin/spread is difference. so if the winner gets 400 points , and the defeated gets 200 points, the winner will get plus 200 margins, defeated get minus 200 margins

7. the committee reserves the rights to disqualify a player who refused to be subjected to the regulations of the game

8. the committee has full authority with regard to the interpretation and modification, if necessary of these rules.the decision of the committee with respect to these rules will be final and binding.

Debate Competition

Format of the competition

In this competition, we use the ASIAN parliamentary system which is nationally used, and adopted from international competition which has already been held before. Just like other debate competition, debaters will take side on the motion and have different principles, impacts and arguments. Debating system in LOVE-Comp 2011 is adapting the WSDC (World School Debating Championship) style which allows POI (Pointsof Information) during the seven minutes and twenty seconds substantive speeches of the speakers. Other rules will be discussed at technical meeting.

We also invite you to delegate N+1. There will be debating and adjudicating seminar and accreditation after technical meeting. The seminar participant (N+1) who is successful in getting the accreditation will be the team of adjudicator along the competition, and N+1 who cannot past the test of accreditation will be a trainee adjudicator. The test of accreditation is adjudication exhibition to see on how you give the score for the exhibition teams.

Story Telling Contest

Format of the competition

“Story Telling competition is a competition where the participants show their creativity in visualizing any stories to the audiences in attractive and unique ways within a predetermined time. Originality, creativity, and attractiveness of the delivery of the stories are the main focus in this competition”.

In this competition, there are any two rounds: The preliminary round and the top five round. Participants are allowed to prepare their performance at home (Including properties, tools, et cetera) only for the preliminary round. Three copies of the script for preliminary round must be submitted at to the committee before competition starts. Late submission of the script will result in reduction of final score. Participants are not allowed to bring their scripts during performance, participants should memorize their scripts. Participants are not allowed to use electronic gadgets during the competition (such as cell phone, laptop, electronic dictionary, etc). In the top five round, the story will be impromptu. The committee will prepare few properties. The participants should prepare their self to use all those properties in their story. Every participant should perform in at most 15 minutes for each round. This excludes the time needed by the contestant to prepare his/her props or tools on the stage. The scoring will be based on performance, expression, intonation, pronunciation, fluency, clarity, gesture, and creativity. The theme of the story about “National Fairy Tales”.

Scrabble Competition

Format of the competition
“SCRABBLE is a board game with a nature similar to a crossword puzzle. It is a word game that is played by forming interlocking words out of randomly picked letters, on the playing board and aim for the highest score possible. Each letter is worth various different values. The purpose of this competition is not only to test and increase the participant's vocabulary, but also to challenge participants to take the best advantage of letter values and premium squares on the board. Therefore this SCRABBLE Competition is just the right place to combine your vocabulary skills and your strategies because EVERY WORD COUNTS!”

In this competition we use “Collins dictionary”. The qualification system is Knock Out.

Speech Contest

Format of the competition
“Being a public speaker is not as simple as using your wits. Get yourself closer to the real world of speaking in front of the public”.
There will be two rounds in this competition. For the first round, all participants are given the freedom to choose their own topic based on the list given by committee. Therefore, they have to submit 3 copies of the text of their speech to the committee at the day of the technical meeting day. They will have 10 minutes to present their topics in front of the judges. A judge will be given five (5) minutes to ask you questions after you deliver your speech.Then, we will choose 5 best participants to go to the Grand Final Round. The topic in the Grand Final Round will be given after the announcement of the grand finalists and the participants will only have 30 minutes to prepare for the speech. The committee will determine the turn of the grand finalists through lottery. Three judges will ask you as many question as they want in five minutes. and Judge’s decision is final.

News Casting Contest

Format of the competition

Professional News Casters need to develop skills in reading and presenting at the same time. Thus, communication skills, intelligence, general knowledge, not to mention your spontaneity are the key performance for every News Casters!
There will be two rounds in this competition. For the qualification round, Participants will cast one news in 5 minutes that consist of opening and closing. Form of the news is reading text to see the ability of your fluency, pronunciation, how to keep eye contact and how to present the news with your own style and character. After this round, we are going to choose 5 best participants according to the score. In this round, Participants will cast two news in 7 minutes that consist of opening and closing. Participants will get 2 minutes to prepare themselves before casting their news in the qualification round and 3 minutes in top five rounds.

1. Debate Competition

Format of the competition
British Parliamentary (BP) is going to be employed in this competition. Though it is familiar in Java, this may not be a common system in Lampung because we even are the first competition organizer who tries to use BP system in this province. Due to the unfamiliarity of the participant toward the system, the committee will organize debate seminar and exhibition one day before the competition is held or at the same day with the technical meeting day. It’s time for us to learn together how it works and please do trust us that it will be a new challenge and experience for all of you. There will be 3 preliminary rounds, 1 quarter final round, 1 semifinal round and 1 grand final round. Detail information is on technical meeting day.
Participant
Anybody is welcome to join this competition. One team consists of 2 people and no additional adjudicator needed from each team. We are not going to limit your age, your academic status, and your institution. A teacher can be in one team with his student, a coach of debate can be in one team with a professor even from UCLA or Harvard University, a high school student can be in one team with student from another school, etc. However, if you want to bring the name of your institution, the team from one institution is limited to only 3 teams. We welcome 32 teams on first come first served basis

The System of Debate Competition we use here is British Parliamentary System, this system had been presented by The 1st E-Fest a year ago, and the spirit was as great and challenging as it was expected, so guys, we would like to make you feel the real atmosphere of strong competitive debate here by most challenging system of debating ever, British Parliamentary.

3. Challenging the Motion is allowed for the 1st speaker of The Opening Opposition Team, if the motion defined by the 1st speaker of the opening government is truistic, squirreling, and un-debatable. If this really happen, The 1st speaker of the closing government has a right to choose which motion will be debated, the motion defined by the 1st speaker of the opening opposition or the motion defined by the 1st speaker of the opening government, then the closing opposition should just follow the motion definition chosen by the 1st speaker of the closing government as the debated motion.
4. The Judgment will be based on VP (Victory Point), Margin, and Score in accordance with the point of matter, method, and manner.
5. The Rule of Time Management:
Averagely, each speaker is given the maximum time for 7 minutes and 20 seconds (7’. 20” )
During the speech of each speaker, there will be:
- Once knock after 1 minutes spent during the speech as a sign that POI (point of information) is allowed to be proposed.
- Once knock after 6 minutes spent during the speech as a sign that POI (point of information) is no longer allowed to be proposed.
- Twice knock after 7 minutes spent during the speech (1st warning that time of the speech almost over)
- Continues Knocks after 7 minutes and 20 seconds of the speech (this should be the end of the speech of each speaker)
After the time keeper knocks continuously, the speaker should really consider ending her/ his speech as soon as possible in order to save his/ her point in manner judgment.
Each speaker is claimed to be able to manage the time as efficient and effective possible in order to make their speech of debating effective as well.
6. Impolite attitude, dirty words, physical harassment, sarcasm, and any other kinds of violence are absolutely banned.
7. The Debaters are allowed to bring any supporting properties and just using it before the debate is started, when the debate is started, any properties (e.g: laptop, materials, and cell phone) should not be brought or used during the debate. It might be submitted to each committee of the debate chamber.
8. The time given for the building case is 30 minutes for the impromptu motions and 15 minutes for the prepared motions.

2. Story Telling Contest

Format of the competition
There will be two rounds in this contest. At the first round, each participant has to prepare one story and submit 4 copies of their story to the committee at the day of the technical meeting day or at the day of the competition. The person has to tell the story without bring the text. 10-15 minutes are the time for each participant. And for The Grand Final Round will be impromptu story. Eight participants are going to Grand Final Round, and the participants have to tell the story based on their imagination with the properties provided by the committees But don’t worry because the committee will tell the properties that will be given and give an hour to the participants to make the impromptu story. The time given is 7-10 minutes in the grand final round. Each participant has to tell the moral value of the story. Properties for preliminary round (first round) should be prepared by participants but property for Grand Final Round (second round) will be provided by committee
Participant
This is really for general. We are not going to limit your academic background, your status, and your age. A teacher can join this competition; a coach can join as well, a high school student or junior high are eligible to join as well. However, if you want to bring the name of your institution, one participant from one institution is limited to only 3 participants. We welcome participants on first come first served basis.

3. Scrabble Competition

Rules

Official Dictionary:
Collins Scrabble Word List Dictionary

Format of the competition
This is a scrabble competition base on international dictionary, Collins dictionary. There will be two preliminary rounds, 16 teams will go to the octo final, so there will be 8 teams for quarter final round, 4 teams’ best will deserve going to semi final round, and finally two teams will fight in the final. The third winner will be played off by those who fail in semi final round.
Participant
This is also general for everyone who is interested in taking a part in our scrabble competition. Everyone is invited but there should be only 3 teams from one institution. The quota is 64 teams.
SCRABBLE GENERAL RULES
1. The players of scrabble consist of two groups; each group consists of two members.
2. The players from the same group will sit face to face.
3. Players must show their identity tag given by the ESo committee when entering the competition room.
4. There should be no communication in any form between the players and/or to the spectators during the match. Communication can be made only to the regulator(s) or Committee.
5. During the game, players are not allowed to:
• Open any kind of dictionaries, books or other reading materials.
• Distract other player’s attention in any way.
• Leave the location of the game by any cause, unless permitted by the regulator
6. After the game, all players must sign the score sheet, as to agree the final score. Once the score sheet is signed, no objection can be made.
7. Tolerance of lateness for the competing group is 10 minutes starting from the scheduled time.
8. Per match, a winning team will get 1 victory point, while the defeated team will get 0 victory point.
9. Margin/Spread is difference/gap score between winner team and defeated team. So if the winner team gets 300 points, and defeated team gets 200 points, the winner team will get plus 100 margins, defeated team gets minus 100 margins.
10. Maximum margin in one match is 300. If there is a game which has margin over 300, it will still be counted as 300. This is to avoid an unfair set-up match.
11. The Committee reserves the rights to disqualify a group who refused to be subjected to the regulations of the game.
12. The Committee has full authority with regard to the interpretation and modification, if necessary of these rules, or if not stated in constitution. The decision of the Committee with respect to these rules will be final and binding.

THE GAME
Before
1. Before the game is started, if requested by either of the group, the regulator will count the tiles. After counted, the tiles are put back in the box or sack and scrambled.
2. Every player will draw a tile at random. The player who draws a single tile earlier in the alphabet (blank counted before "A") will play first. If there is more than one person that gets the same earliest letter tile, the drawing is restarted by those people having the same lettered tile.
3. After the first player is set, all tiles used in the placement drawing will be put back to the box or sack and scrambled. The players will then draw 7 (seven) tiles each from the box or sack, starting from the first player, then goes in a clockwise fashion (to the left side of the first player).
During
1. The first player will combine two or more tiles into a legal word and placed across the “star” sign in the middle of the game board. The placement is only either vertically or horizontally. After the first player is done, then the turn goes to the next player, clockwise.
2. Players can put only one tile to make word(s), except in opening moves
3. Total time for 1 scrabble match is 60 (sixty) minutes.
4. After finishing his/her turn, the player has to say “finish” and after that, he/she has to count the score from each turn himself/herself and announces it to the other players.
5. The objection can be made after the player in turn said “finish” and before the scoring sheet is written completely.
6. If a player has 3 (three) or more tiles with the same letter, he/she is not allowed to replace the tiles.
7. To replace the tile(s), the player must say “exchange” first and put down the replaced tile(s) into the box or sack, scramble the tiles, and then take the tiles in the exact number he/she put down. If the tiles in the box or sack are 8 or less, the player cannot replace his/her tiles but is still allowed to make a pass.
8. If a word is challenged, the PIC (Person in Charge) will check the word according to the regulation and/or ask the dictionary checker to check the word according to the official dictionary.
9. If the challenged word is legal, then the challenged player score will get additional 5 points.
10. If the challenged word is illegal, then the tiles must be taken back and the challenged player score don’t get penalty point, the challenger don’t get bonus point. The players can challenge only one (1) word per turn.
11. If a word is not challenged by either of the other players from the opposite groups, the word is considered correct.
12. If the first word of the game is challenged, and the word turns out to be illegal, the double word tile (the star signed tile at the centre of the board) is still available for use at the next turn. This rule of availability also applies to other double-word, triple-word stars which challenged word is illegal.
13. The players are allowed to look a wordlist but only the 2-letter words during the game (There will be a 2-letter wordlist at each table.)
14. The game ends if any of these conditions fulfilled:
• A player has used all of his/her tiles and there are no tiles left in the box or sack.
• All four players passed in one cycle (changing tile is not considered as a pass)
• The time is over.
15. A group will be decided as the winner of the game when:
• The total score of the group is the highest when the game is ended.
• The committee disqualifies the opposite group by any reason.
• The opposite group walks out.

TIE GAME AND POSITION
Tie game is rare (about 1 every 300 games) but possible. When it happens:
• If the group’s total score is exactly the same, the game is considered as tie game, and both of teams only get 0,5 victory points, with 0 margin.
• If in final standing there are two or more teams which has same victory points and total spread, the position is decided by cumulative total score.

SCORING SYSTEM
1. The value of the word which passes the ‘star’ sign (the first word) is doubled.
2. The scoring is based on the value of each tile combined with the premium box(es) used. The blank tile has no value of its own.
3. Premium boxes scoring:
Color of the premium box Scoring
Light blue Double the value of the tile
Dark blue Triple the value of the tile
Light red Double the score of the word(s) which crosses it
Dark red Triple the score of the word(s) which crosses it

4. If a word passes the blue and red premium boxes at the same time, then the score is counted based on the value of each tile doubled or tripled by the blue box(es), then accumulated by other tiles to be doubled or tripled based on the red box(es).
5. The premium boxes are only valid for the first input. For the next usage, the value of the tile and words are back to normal.
6. If two or more words are formed in a turn, then all the score made are counted. Example: “pace” (put horizontally) is added with the word “start” (put vertically) with the letter s in front of the letter “p” in pace so that it becomes “space”. The score is the score of the word “space” added with the word “start”.
7. If two or more words are formed in a turn and the letter that is used in both words is in a premium box, then all the score made are counted. Example: “pace” (put horizontally) is added with the word “start” (put vertically) with the letter s in front of the letter “p” in pace so that it becomes “space, and s is in the red premium box. The score is the score of the word “space” added with the word “start”.
8. If player be able to use seven tile in one turn, he/she will receive additional fifty bonus points
9. At the end of the game, the score of each player will be subtracted with the cumulative value of unused tiles by the players.
10. If a player uses all his tiles to end the game, then the total score is added with 2(two) times cumulative value of unused tiles of the other players, the other player’s score doesn’t subtracted
11. At the end of the game, the scores of the two players from each group will be added to determine the winner of the game.

LEGAL ADDITION
The players are allowed to only make these kinds of addition to a word, as long as it still valid word:
1. Added with prefix, such as: hyper-, inter-, a-, re-, un-, etc.
2. Added with suffix, such as: -able, -ful, -ian, -ly, -ion, etc.
3. Added with some tiles so that the word transforms from and to noun, verb, adjective, or adverb, example: interject added with –ion becomes interjection.
4. Added with –ing.
5. Added with –ed, -es, -d, -or, -s. For example the word war (put vertically) added with the word star (put horizontally) with the letter s put after the letter r in “war” so becomes wars, it is still legal.

LEGAL WORDS
1. Notes of musical octave, example: mi, fa, etc
2. Interjection (as long as valid according to the dictionary)
3. Slang and Colloquial, [sl] and [colloq].
4. Words that have been used before in the game, either in the same form or in a different form, for example: ax and axe.
5. Word that has been used before in the game
6. Informal writing, example: thru, tho, etc.
7. Name of letter, example: zee, pi, etc.
8. Inappropriate words, in the form of usu vulgar and usu obscene.
9. Etymologies of technical words, example: megawatt [ISV]
10. Etymologies of a language taken from foreign form, example: kapok [malay]
11. Name of a currency, example: Ringgit, Baht, etc.

SPECTATOR RULES
1. Spectators are allowed to watch the scrabble competition but they are limited into the numbers allowed by the committee.
2. Spectators must show their identity card (for students) or other identity card when they enter the room where the competition is held.
3. Spectators are allowed to take photos at a distance permitted by the committee.
4. Spectators are not allowed to:
• Stand across the permitted separator.
• Make noise during the game.
• Distract players’ attention in any way.
• Have any kind of communication to the regulator(s) or players.

PENALTY
1. A player who communicates with other player and/or spectator will be given warning. The player will be disqualified if violating this rule three times.
2. If a group does not show up after the time stated in general rule number 8, it is considered a walk out. The team who wins by walk out will get the maximum margin of that round.
3. Violations to any of Spectator’s rules may result in a warning or the spectator’s dismissal from the competition room.

4. Speech Contest

Format of the competition
There will be two rounds in this competition. For the first round, you are given the freedom to choose your own topic base on the list given by committee. Therefore you have to submit three (3) copies of the text of your speech to the committee at the day of the technical meeting or at the day of the competition. You will have ten (10) minutes to present your topic in front of the judges. A judge will be given five (5) minutes to ask you questions after you deliver your speech. Five (5) best participants will go to the grand final round. The topic in the grand final round will be given after the announcement of grand finalists and the participants will have 30 minutes to prepare for the speech. The committee will determine the turn of the grand finalists through lottery. Three judges will ask you as many questions as they want in five minutes. The judge decision is final.
Participant
The competition is again open to everyone. Even a lecturer, an English teacher, a student, an alumni, etc are welcomed. But please do remember, we limit 3 participants from one institution. Our quota is 30 participants, so please be hurry to make sure your seat is safe.

5. News casting Contest

General Rules
In this news casting competition, each participant will be insisted to perform news in a way of professional news anchor as seen on screen. This competition will be performed individually for all rounds as explained below:
1. Preliminary Round
Each participant starts to perform in no more than 5 minutes.
The elimination system will lead best 5 participants to the final round. The time limitation for each participant is 5 minutes that consist of a breaking news provided by the committee.

2. Final Round
After the previous breakthrough, final round will define most and evaluate who will be the champions. In this round, participants will have two different types of news that must be read-tagged one another in an interesting way. The time limitation for each person is 7 minutes that consist of a breaking news and other kind of news (sport, entertainment, life style, etc) given by the committee.

6. Wall Magazine Competition

General Rules
1. The theme for this competition is about “ Indonesia in The Future”
2. The competition will be held in only one round
3. The quota for this competition is 30 teams
4. One team consists of three participants
5. The participants bring their own materials and equipments
6. Each team is required to start make the wall magazine in the venue, not at home
7. Participants may use free materials with the wall magazine size 80 x 60 cm
8. All articles used must be in written hand
9. The content of the wall magazine must be clear and easy to read and does not contain any SARA
10. The participant must not disturb other participants or make any noise
11. The time for the contest is 150 minutes
12. The scoring consists of some criteria; tidiness, content, appearance, and the

English Society Festival 2009

1.Debate Competition
Format of the competition
British Parliamentary (BP) is going to be employed in this competition. Though it is familiar in Java, this may not be a common system in Lampung because we even are the first competition organizer who tries to use BP system in this province. Due to the unfamiliarity of the participant toward the system, the committee will organize debate seminar and exhibition one day before the competition is held or at the same day with the technical meeting day. It’s time for us to learn together how it works and please do trust us that it will be a new challenge and experience for all of you. There will be 3 preliminary rounds, 1 quarter final round, 1 semifinal round and 1 grand final round. Detail information is on technical meeting day.
Participant
Anybody is welcome to join this competition. One team consists of 2 people and no additional adjudicator needed from each team. We are not going to limit your age, your academic status, and your institution. A teacher can be in one team with his student, a coach of debate can be in one team with a professor even from UCLA or Harvard University, a high school student can be in one team with student from another school, etc. However, if you want to bring the name of your institution, the team from one institution is limited to only 3 teams. We welcome 32 teams on first come first served basis.

2.Story Telling Contest
Format of the competition
There will be two rounds in this contest. At the first round, a team, consisting of 2 people, has to prepare one story and submit 3 copies of their story to the committee at the day of the technical meeting day. A person has to tell the story first. If the committee claps his hand, the second person has to continue and vice versa. The committee will clap his hand whenever he likes so both participants must master and be really ready to continue his friend’s story. Then, if the number of the participant is more than 20, 10 best teams will compete to the Grand Final Round. But if less than 20, 6 best teams only who will go to the Grand Final Round. The Grand Final Round will be impromptu story. Two teams will compete here on the stage. It will be begun with a paragraph read by committee. The first participant from the first team has to continue telling the story based on their imagination. The time given is one minute. After one minute, the committee will give a sign that the time for the first participant is over. The second participant has to continue the story in another one minute. Therefore, the first participant from another team has to continue and so on. Every participant from each team will get 3 chances to be on the stage. The last participant has to make the ending and tell the moral value of the story.

4.Speech Contest
Format of the competition
There will be two rounds in this competition. For the first round, all participants are given the freedom to choose their own topic based on the list given by committee at the day of the registration. Therefore, they have to submit 3 copies of the text of their speech to the committee at the day of the technical meeting day. They will have 10 minutes to present their topics in front of the judges. Then, if the number of the participant is more than 20, 10 best participants will compete to the Grand Final Round. But if less than 20, 5 best participants only who will go to the Grand Final Round. The topic in the Grand Final Round will be given after the announcement of the grand finalists and the participants will only have 30 minutes to prepare for the speech.

The competition is again open to everyone. Even a lecturer, an English teacher, a student, an alumni, etc are welcomed. But please do remember, we limit 3 participants from one institution. Our quota is 30 participants, so please be hurry to make sure your seat is safe.

Dalam rangka memasyarakatkan ASEAN dan membangun kesiapan kaum muda menghadapi terbentuknya Komunitas ASEAN 2015, Direktorat Jenderal Kerjasama ASEAN Departemen Luar Negeri Republik Indonesia kembali menggelar Pemilihan Duta Muda ASEAN-Indonesia (PDMAI) tahun 2009.

Akan dipilih sepasang pemudi/pemuda yang mampu memainkan peran sebagai duta-duta ASEAN sekaligus duta bangsa guna memperkenalkan dan mendekatkan ASEAN kepada generasi muda di tanah air, mempromosikan Indonesia dan ASEAN kepada masyarakat internasional melalui berbagai kegiatan kepemudaan di tingkat bilateral, regional maupun internasional, dan menjadi wakil Departemen Luar Negeri dalam berbagai kegiatan yang melibatkan kaum muda.

I. Kriteria Peserta:

* Warga Negara Indonesia;
* mahasiswi/mahasiswa berprestasi;
* memiliki Indeks Prestasi Kumulatif (IPK) minimum 2,5 untuk jenjang setingkat S-1 atau dibawahnya (D-3 atau D-2), dan IPK 2,75 untuk mahasiswa jenjang S-2;
* berwawasan luas dan memiliki pengetahuan tentang Indonesia, ASEAN, dan daerahnya;
* berpenampilan menarik dengan tinggi dan berat badan proporsional;
* mempunyai pengalaman dalam berorganisasi;
* mempunyai kemampuan di bidang seni dan budaya;
* menguasai Bahasa Indonesia dan Bahasa Inggris atau bahasa asing lainnya;
* kreatif dan inovatif; dan mau bekerjasama;
* berusia tidak lebih dari 26 tahun;
* bersedia dan sanggup mengikuti seluruh rangkaian kegiatan seleksi yang ditetapkan oleh panitia penyelenggara.

II. Prosedur Pendaftaran

Peserta diwajibkan mengirimkan kelengkapan berkas pendaftaran yang terdiri dari:

1. Formulir pendaftaran yang telah diisi lengkap (download here (pdf 56 kb)
2. Salinan kartu identitas (KTP/Paspor) yang masih berlaku
3. Salinan Kartu Mahasiswa yang masih berlaku
4. Foto berwarna tanpa rekayasa ukuran kartu pos: close up, seluruh badan tampak depan, dan seluruh badan tampak samping, masing-masing sebanyak 2 (dua) lembar
5. Karya tulis dengan tema "Duta Muda ASEAN-Indonesia 2009: The Role of Youth in Building theASEAN Community 2015" dalam Bahasa Inggris tidak lebih dari 2 halaman A4, huruf Arial 11, diketik 1 spasi;
6. Daftar Riwayat Hidup (Curriculum Vitae)
7. Salinan transkrip IPK terakhir
8. (Copy) bukti prestasi pendukung (jika ada)

Seluruh dokumen pendaftaran disusun sesuai urutan di atas dalam amplop tertutup bertuliskan "PDMAI 2009" di sebelah kiri atas, dan dikirimkan ke:

III. Proses Seleksi

Seleksi Tahap I: kelengkapan administrasi dan penilaian berdasarkan berkas pendaftaran yang diterima Panitia.

Seleksi Tahap II: uji kemampuan dan wawancara tahap pertama.
Seleksi tahap ini dibagi dalam tiga wilayah seleksi:

* Wilayah I, meliputi Sumatera, Jawa dan sekitarnya
* Wilayah II, meliputi Kalimantan, Bali, Nusa Tenggara dan sekitarnya
* Wilayah III, meliputi Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua dan sekitarnya

Seleksi Tahap III: wawancara tahap II untuk memilih 10 pasang finalis.

Seleksi Tahap IV: karantina dan grand final untuk memilih satu pasang Duta Muda ASEAN-Indonesia 2009.

IV. Hadiah

Para pemenang PDMAI 2009 akan mendapatkan kesempatan mewakili Indonesia dalam berbagai kegiatan kepemudaan di tingkat internasional, dan memperoleh piagam serta hadiah-hadiah hiburan.

V. Pengumuman

Peserta-peserta yang berhasil lolos ke Seleksi Tahap II akan diumumkan pada minggu kedua bulan Juni 2009 melalui situs Departemen Luar Negeri: www.deplu.go. id.
Dalam hal ini Keputusan Panitia adalah mutlak dan tidak dapat diganggu gugat.

The Low Salary of Teachers Decreases Their Creativity

I was browsing around and this phrase caught my attention. It goes like this - There's no denying...that Beethoven came with music in his soul, Picasso was drawing like an angel in the crib. And you are born with it. I asked myself, “am I creative?”. I had doubts, but then again the answer came as yes. This statement is true. Everybody is born with creativity, all we have to do is be given the time and opportunity to explore it.

Now let me talk about the teaching profession. I’ll give you the facts simple and flat, according to what I have gathered. Teachers are highly respected. They have a profession that is given a high regard in the community. Along with it is dealing with different personalities and tempers of the students, thus, they have to be continuously inventive to accommodate the diversity. Unfortunately, the ugly part of it is in reality, teaching is one of the low paying professions. Based on the Human Development Index done by United Nations, Indonesia ranked 107 from 170 countries based on the quality of university students produced by our country. Why is this happening? It’s because those who graduated as teachers opt for a high paying job. And the hope for quality education dies.

My first reaction to this topic was – absolutely not! It doesn’t affect their creativity. They should be creative, they have passion and so on and so forth. A good lecture about it was given to me and blessed the people who opened my eyes and enabled me to look at the real problem. Now I can say that I do believe that, this statement is right.

You might wonder how I can say this? Of course, teachers are passionate and creative, however we must also remember that they are also human beings. They have basic needs that they have to fulfill.

This is actualy tricky. It is like a domino where all things are linked together. Teacher, creativity, time, passion, motivation and salary. When one is not fully supported then everything will come crashing down. I am not saying that teachers are only interested with the money, but let me share to you what I was made to realize.

Let’s start with passion. Passion goes hand and hand with creativity. Passion needs motivation and if the needed motivation is not supplied then passion will be affected. With this passion comes creativity. Of course, it will decrease the creativity because they don’t have the motivation to encourage them when they are teaching in class. A good salary is a good motivation.

And as I have mentioned earlier, teachers are also human who have their basic needs. Everybody works to fulfill this basic needs for them and their family. It is the same thing with teachers. Teachers try to get enough money to be able to sustain their needs. If they receive only a small amount of wage, how can they survive? The low salary won’t help much, thus it will decrease the teacher’s time and concentration, because they will now think of other means to be able to provide and fulfill their basic needs. They cannot concentrate well; they won’t become focused in their lesson. Some if not most of them would even consider getting a second source of income. It wouldn’t really matter what kind, but the point is it is able to support their needs. So, the time that is supposed to be used for being creative is lost.

A very obvious example are our state school teachers who look for a second job or even third job after school so as to be able to sustain their family ‘s basic needs. So where is the time for them to relax and enhance their teaching methodology. They get lower salary, I’d say they won’t be able to focus in class and it will definitely decrease their creativity. When this thing happens, it will now come to the point that it is like eating. We merely eat to survive and not to relish the food.

Sad to say that this problem is observed globally and not limited to Indonesia. In indonesia, we already know that the constitution demands, the government to spend 25% from APBN for education. Up until now, the government continuously fails to fulfill that and still can’t give the money from APBN to the teachers. Where does the money go? Is that about corruption again? How can Indonesian students improve?

Other countries like Malaysia are already trying to address the problem, they got 20% from the government and awarded it to education which resulted in having a better education. Indonesia is also trying, but the problem is the implementation. Teachers are the moulders of people in the society, thus the salary that greatly affects their creativity should be addressed. I am not saying that money is everything, but money can help, and it is very important.

Lastly, as I have mentioned earlier, everybody is born with creativity. All that is needed is time and the opportunity to explore and be resourceful. And not having a second job or the burden of thinking about how they could fulfill their basic needs is a key. The government must start giving more attention to this problem and not wait until the intellectuals who are supposed to be teachers would not choose to be a teacher, but opt for a better high paying job. Teachers are not asking for a skyrocketing salary. What they are asking is what they deserve and what is just.

INTRODUCTION

THIS document is an introduction to Australasian Parliamentary debates, the motions/topics, team structure, etc. It is meant to help institutions and universities who are new to the Parliamentary debating format and are interested in participating in a debating competition using the format, but are still unclear on the rules and regulations. This document is not intended to serve as a definitive guide to the rules of the tournament.

THE BASICS OF DEBATING

DEBATING is about developing your communication skills. It is about assembling and organizing effective arguments, persuading and entertaining an audience, and using your voice and gestures to convince an adjudicator that your arguments outweigh your oppositions. Debating is not about personal abuse, irrational attacks or purely emotional appeals.
A debate is held between two teams of three members each. These two teams will be referred to as the Affirmative and the Negative. Members of each team are assigned positions as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd speakers. For each debate, a motion is given. After the motion is given, teams are given thirty (30) minutes to prepare for each debate.
Each of the speakers will deliver a substantial speech of seven (7) minutes duration and either the 1st or the 2nd speaker on both sides will deliver the reply speeches for their teams. Reply speeches will be five (5) minutes.
Thus, the complete order of speaking during a debate is as follows:
• 1st Affirmative – 7 minutes
• 1st Negative – 7 minutes
• 2nd Affirmative – 7 minutes
• 2nd Negative – 7 minutes
• 3rd Affirmative – 7 minutes
• 3rd Negative – 7 minutes
• Negative Reply – 5 minutes
• Affirmative Reply – 5 minutes

What must both sides do? In general:
• Affirmative (also known as “the Government”)
The Affirmative team must define the motion and support this by giving constructive arguments. The right to define first resides with the Affirmative team, who is expected to give a reasonable definition for the motion.
• Negative (also known as “the Opposition”)
The Negative team must oppose the motion as defined by the Affirmative, and build a counter-case against the Affirmative. In the event the Negative team feels that the definition is invalid, they may challenge the definition and propose an alternative definition. However, the Negative team cannot raise a challenge simply on the basis that their definition is more reasonable.

MOTIONS

MOTIONS, also known as topics, are full propositional statements that determine what a debate shall be about. In the debate, the Affirmative team must argue to defend the propositional statement of the motion, and the Negative team must argue to oppose it.
Here are some examples of motions that can be debated about:
• That we should give President Habibie a chance
• That Indonesia should change its constitution
• That football is overvalued in today’s society
• That cigarette companies should not be held responsible for the bad effects of smoking
• That American pop culture is a threat to civilization
• That long is better than short

DEFINITIONS

BEFORE a debate ensues, the motion that is given must first be defined by the Affirmative team. A definition clarifies the motion. A definition gives a clear description of boundaries to the motion, thereby limiting what the debate will be about into a focused area of discussion. This prevents the debate from turning into a vague and confusing show of unrelated arguments and different interpretations from both teams of what is actually being debated among them.
The definition should take the motion as a whole, defining individual words only if they have a key role. Out of the definition should come a clear understanding of the issues that will be fought over in the debate. If the Affirmative chooses to define the motion on a word-by-word basis, it should define words or phrases by their common usage. Dictionaries may be useful for finding a common meaning or a pithy explanation of a word, but they are not an absolute authority.
An example of a definition could be as follows: Given the motion “that what goes up, must come down”, the Affirmative is presented with many options on how to define the motion, because the nature of the motion itself is quite abstract. One way they could define it is as follows: they could define the object (the ‘what’) as being the president of the Republic of Indonesia. In essence, the motion would then state that anyone who “goes up” (takes power) as president of Indonesia, must undoubtedly one day “come down” (step down from power). This would give us the definition “that the Indonesian presidency should be limited to 2 terms”. The Affirmative team could then argue on the detriments of having unlimited presidential terms, citing proof such as the total control of the past regime under Soeharto, etc.
The above example shows that in most situations, the actual issue of the debate is unknown until the Affirmative delivers their definition of the motion. Only then does it become clear.
Always keep in mind that a definition must be reasonable. This is to say that:
• it must be debatable (i.e. have two sides to it), and
• it must not be a bizarre distortion of the motion.

This is not to say that an Affirmative team may not choose an unusual interpretation of the motion, but they must be prepared to justify it.
The Negative, in general, must accept the definition made by the Affirmative, but the Negative shall have the right of challenging the definition if it does not conform to either of the two requirements set out above. However, a Negative team cannot raise a challenge simply on the basis that their definition seems more reasonable. They can only challenge a definition if they can prove it to be either Truistic, Tautological, Squirreling, or Time and place setting (see below).
If a Negative team accepts the definition, they only need to say so, and it is unnecessary to restate it. If they challenge it, their justification for doing so must be clearly stated, and an alternative definition must be put forward. If the definition is accepted, then that definition must stand. The Negative must adjust their case to that definition, and the adjudicator's views on its reasonableness become irrelevant.
The following definitions are strictly prohibited at the tournament, and should be challenged by the Negative team:
• Truistic definitions: These are definitions which are ‘true’ by nature and thus make the proposed arguments unarguable and therefore unreasonable in the context of the debate. If a team defines the debate truistically, they seek to win the debate by the truth of their definition rather than by the strength of their arguments and supporting evidence. An example of a truistic definition would be if the motion “that we should eat, drink, and be merry” were defined as “that we should eat, because otherwise we would starve to death; drink, because otherwise we would die of thirst; and be merry because we are alive”.
• Tautological or circular definitions: This happens when a definition is given in such a way that it is logically impossible to negate it. An example would be if the motion “that technology is killing our work ethic” were defined as follows: the Affirmative team decides to define the term ‘technology’ as meaning “all scientific advancements that make life easier and therefore kills our work ethic”. This would result in the whole definition “that all scientific advancements that make life easier and therefore kills our work ethic is killing our work ethic”. This cannot be logically proven false.
• Squirreling: Definitions that are not tied down to the spirit of the motion and do not have a proper logical link to the motion will constitute squirreling. For instance, when given the motion “that the USA is opening up to the PRC”, an Affirmative team could try and define USA as “Untidy Students of Asia”, and PRC as “Pretty Room Cleaners”. This is definitely squirreling, as anyone would agree that the spirit of the motion is about the relationship between the United States and China!
• Time and Place-setting: The subject matter of the debate cannot be confined to a particular time and place. For instance, trying to limit the subject matter to only the economic development of Japan during the specific period of the Meiji restoration.

A note on definitional challenges: be very careful about challenging definitions - only do so if you are absolutely certain that the Affirmative's definition is unfair. It is better to be brave and dump your prepared case in favor of tackling the Affirmative on their own terms than to issue an unjustified definition challenge. By the same token, Affirmative teams should try to ensure that their definition is fair.

THEME LINE

THE theme line is the underlying logic of a team’s case. It is the main instrument of argumentation that is used to prove a team’s stand on the motion. A theme line can be viewed as a ‘Case In A Nutshell’, because it concisely explains a team’s strategy in defending or negating the motion.
The theme line of a team must heavily imbue each speech of every team member. It is the main idea that links together the first, second, and third speakers, ensuring consistency among all speeches.
In formulating a theme line, it is often helpful to ask the question: Why is the propositional statement given by the definition of the motion true (or false, for the Negative team)? Without further explanation, this propositional statement is a mere assertion, or a statement which is logically unproven to be true. The answer to this question must be an argument which proves the assertion given by the motion. This argument is the theme line.
A theme line should be kept short, and it may take a form of a single sentence, an arrangement of several statements into a logical syllogism, etc. Whatever it is, it must by itself prove the motion (as it is defined) and all arguments brought forward should be based on this theme line.

TEAM SPLIT

DEBATING is a team activity. One person cannot take all the arguments and become the sole defender of the team's case. Therefore, there is a need to decide on how the arguments should be distributed among speakers. This is called the team split. Simply put, the team split is the distribution of arguments to the first, second, and third speaker.
Be careful, though, that each individual speech by itself must already prove the motion. You should not create what is called a hung case. A hung case is when an individual speech fails to prove the motion by itself, but instead requires coupling it with other speeches to be able to finally prove the motion.
For a more elaborate exposition on formulating theme lines and team splits, please consult the document entitled “Casebuilding Examples of Australasian Parliamentary Debates”. It contains thorough examples that give a very clear idea on how to construct theme lines and team splits from definitions.

ARGUMENTS

ARGUMENTATION is the process of explaining why a point of view should be accepted. It concerns the logic and the evidence supporting a particular conclusion. Use evidence (i.e. examples, facts, statistics, quotations of expert/public opinion etc.) to back up each point you make in your argument. Show how each piece of evidence is relevant and how it advances your argument. Make a point, give the reason for that point, and supply evidence to back it up.
Arguments are not assertions. Assertions are statements that have yet to be proven to be logically true. On the other hand, arguments must have supporting logic and facts that can show its validity.
What adjudicators look for in a good argument
• Relevance
• Organization
• Consistency and internal logic - i.e. don't contradict yourself or your teammates
• Clarity (remember, debating is about persuading your audience and adjudicator that you're right - so make sure they can understand what you're saying!)
• Effective use of evidence

Preparing a Reasonable Argument
One skill of good debating is being able to construct, and to understand, a reasoned argument and – especially important – to recognize a fallacious or fraudulent argument. The question is not whether we like the conclusion that emerges out of a train of reasoning, but whether the conclusion follows from the premises and whether those premises are true.
When developing your argument, consider the following factors:
• Wherever possible offer independent confirmation of the "facts."
• Prepare for substantive debate on the evidence by considering all points of view.
• Arguments from authority carry little weight – "authorities" have made mistakes in the past. They will do so again in the future. Perhaps a better way to say it is that there are no authorities; at most, there are experts.
• Prepare more than one case. If there's something to be defined, think of all the different ways in which it could be defined. Then think of arguments by which you might systematically rebut each of the cases. What survives, the case that resists rebuttal in this Darwinian selection among "multiple working cases," has a much better chance of being the stronger case than if you had simply run with the first idea that caught your fancy.
• Try not to get overly attached to a idea just because it's yours. It's only a waystation in the pursuit of a winning argument. Ask yourself why you like the idea. Compare it fairly with the alternatives. See if you can find reasons for rejecting it. If you don't, others will.
• Quantify. If whatever it is you're explaining has some measure, some numerical quantity attached to it, you'll be much better able to defend it against generalized rebuttal. What is vague and qualitative is open to many explanations. Of course there are truths to be sought in the many qualitative issues we are obliged to confront, but finding them is more challenging.
• If there's a chain of argument, every link in the chain must work (including the premise) – not just most of them.
• Occam's Razor. This convenient rule-of-thumb urges us when faced with two hypotheses that explain the data equally well to choose the simpler.
• Always ask whether the case can be, at least in principle, falsified. Propositions that are unfalsifiable are called "truisms" and are not in the spirit of debating. You run a good chance of losing a debate, especially if the opposition correctly identifies that your arguments cannot be rebutted.

REBUTTAL

REBUTTAL is the process of proving that the opposing team's arguments should be accorded less weight than is claimed for them. It may consist of:
• showing that the opposing argument is based on an error of fact or an erroneous interpretation of fact
• showing that the opposing argument is irrelevant to the proof of the topic
• showing that the opposing argument is illogical
• showing that the opposing argument, while itself correct, involves unacceptable implications
• showing that the opposing argument, while itself correct, should be accorded little weight

As with arguments, assertions do not equal rebuttals. Just as teams must show how and why their own arguments are valid, so they must show how and why the opposition's arguments are invalid.
• An argument may be wrong in fact or logic - if so, say how and why
• An argument may contradict their team line, or something else a speaker on that team has said – if so, point it out
• An argument may be true but completely irrelevant – these are often called “red herrings”.

Organization of rebuttal
It is not necessary to rebutt every single point and fact raised by the opposition. Single out their main arguments and attack those first. Savage their theme line and show how it falls down – and show why yours is better! You should rebutt by both destroying the opposition's arguments and by establishing a case that directly opposes theirs.

ROLES OF THE SPEAKERS

THE six speakers in an Australasian Parliamentary debate each have different roles to play and adjudicators should take account of how well a speaker fulfills his/her obligations.
The first speakers establish the fundamentals of their team's cases
First Affirmative’s duties:
• Defines the motion of the debate. The 1st Affirmative should ensure that no important points of definition are left out.
• Presents the Affirmative’s theme line. This is normally presented in one or several lines of analysis, explaining why the Affirmative’s case is logically correct.
• Outlines the Affirmative’s team split. This can be done by saying, for example: “I, as the first affirmative will deal with the philosophical base of our case, while my colleague, the second affirmative speaker, will examine its practical implications”.
• Delivers substantial arguments (“1st Affirmative’s part of the split”). After establishing the definition, theme line, and team split, the 1st Affirmative should then deal with the arguments/points that have been assigned to him/her in the team split.
• Provide a brief summary/recap of the speech.

The 1st Affirmative may spend some time on the definition and on establishing the theme line and showing how it is going to develop, but it is important to leave time to present some substantive arguments.
First Negative’s duties:
• Provide a response to the definition (accepts or challenges the definition).
• Rebutts 1st Affirmative, delivers a part of the negative's substantive case.
• Presents the Negative’s theme line.
• Outlines the Negative’s team split.
• Delivers substantial arguments (“1st Negative’s part of the split”).
• Provide a brief summary/recap of the speech.

The 1st Negative’s role is similar to the role of the 1st Affirmative’s, with the added responsibility of responding to the arguments brought up by the latter. The response to the 1st Affirmative’s arguments can come before the 1st Negative presents his/her own arguments to support the Negative’s case or vice-versa. However, the delivery of rebuttals first is recommended.
After the first speakers have spoken the main direction of each team’s case should be apparent.
The second speakers deal with the bulk of the substantive argument
Second Affirmative’s duties:
• Rebutts the 1st Negative's major arguments.
• Briefly restates/reiterates in general terms the Affirmative’s team case.
• Delivers substantial arguments (“2nd Affirmative’s part of the split”). Most of the 2nd Affirmative's time should be spent dealing with new substantial material/arguments. He or she has the duty to present the bulk of the Affirmative's case in an attempt to further argue in favor of the Affirmative.
• Provide a brief summary/recap of the speech.

The 2nd Affirmative should be prepared to defend the definition if necessary. If it is attacked, it is vital for the 2nd Affirmative to win back the initiative.
Second Negative’s duties:
• Rebuttal of the first two Affirmative speakers.
• Briefly restates/reiterates in general terms the Negative’s team case.
• Delivers substantial arguments (“2nd Negative’s part of the split”).
• Provide a brief summary/recap of the speech.

The 2nd Negative has duties similar to the one performed by the 2nd Affirmative.
Most of the teams' substantive argument should have emerged by the time both second speakers have spoken.
The third speakers main duty is to rebutt the opponent’s case
Third Affirmative’s duties:
• Rebutt the points raised by the first two Negative speakers. The 3rd Affirmative is mainly entrusted with the duty of responding to the arguments of the Negative that were not previously dealt with by the first two Affirmative speakers. 3rd Affirmative may also reinforce rebuttals that have already been stated by teammates.
• Rebuild team’s case (briefly reiterate theme line and first two speakers’ arguments).
• Summarize the issues of the debate.

The role of the third speakers is simply this: Attack! Most of a third speaker's time must be spent rebutting the preceding speakers. Generally at least three quarters of a third speech should be rebuttal.
Rebuttal should ideally be carried out on two levels: on a global level (teamwise), a 3rd speaker should attack the opposing team’s whole case, pointing out the major flaws in argumentation and logic. On a more detailed level (speechwise), a 3rd speaker should be able to point out the mistakes in fact and inconsistency of each individual speech.
Third Negative’s duties:
• Rebutt the points raised by all three Affirmative speakers.
• Rebuild team’s case (briefly reiterate theme line and first two speakers’ arguments).
• Identify the points of contention / the clash of the debate
• Summarize the issues of the debate

The 3rd Negative has duties similar to the ones performed by the 3rd Affirmative. However, the 3rd Negative cannot introduce new matter, except for new examples to reinforce an argument that has previously been brought up. The logic behind this rule is that if a 3rd Negative is allowed to introduce new matter, the Affirmative would be at a disadvantage as they would not have any opportunity to be able to respond to these new arguments.
Reply speakers give a recap of the debate and a convincing biased adjudication
Reply speakers duties (both sides):
• Provide a summary or overview of the debate
• Identify the issues raised by both sides
• Provide a biased adjudication of the debate

Either the first or the second speaker of each side may deliver the reply speech. The Negative team delivers the first reply speech.
A reply speech is a review of both your own and the opposition's case. It represents a chance for the teams to show their arguments in the best light and to summarize the flaws in the opposition's case. The aim is to emphasize the major points made by your own team and to show how these contributed to a logical progression of argument in support of your theme line. At the same time the flaws in the opposition's argument must be outlined. This can be done point-by-point, or by taking a more global approach to the arguments. Both are effective if well done, so find the summary style that suits you best. However, the latter style is often more effective in light of the limited time frame.
The introduction of new material is absolutely prohibited and will be penalized. Any point brought up by the other side which had not been rebutted earlier in the substantial speeches may not be rebutted in the reply speeches. Therefore, this means that all substantive arguments presented in the debate must be dealt with by the opposing team in the substantial speeches.

ADJUDICATION

ADJUDICATION is the process of determining which team wins the debates. This is conducted by an adjudicator, or a panel consisting of an odd number of adjudicators.
There is always a winner in a debate. There are no ‘draws’ or ‘ties’. The speakers are assessed on Matter, Manner, and Method. Matter is 40 points, Manner is 40, and Method is 20, making a total of 100 points for each substantial speech. For reply speeches, Matter and Manner are 20 points and Method is 10, making a total of 50 points.
Matter refers to the points, arguments, logic, facts, statistics, and examples brought up during the course of the debate. Manner is concerned with the style of public-speaking – the use of voice, language, eye contact, notes, gesture, stance, humor and personality as a medium for making the audience more receptive to the argument being delivered. There are no set rules which must be followed by debaters. Method consists of the effectiveness of the structure and organization of each individual speech, the effectiveness of the structure and organization of the team case as a whole, and the extent to which the team reacted appropriately to the dynamics of the debate.

THIS document is not intended to be the definitive set of rules that you must adhere to in debating. It serves as a source of information. For further information, please check out the Casebuilding Examples of Australasian Parliamentary Debate. It provides more in-depth explanation of cases, and gives examples to give a good idea of how one should construct cases.
Finally, it must be said that “practice makes perfect”. No one ever masters the art of swimming or riding a bicycle by thoroughly reading guidelines and handbooks. One must take that first plunge, and perhaps even fall down once or twice, before finally becoming skillful. The same applies to debating. These guidelines should be enough to get you started. But practice makes perfect.

1. Apakah IELSP itu?

Indonesia English Language Study Program adalah program beasiswa yang menawarkan kesempatan untuk mengikuti kursus Bahasa Inggris di universitas-universitas di Amerika Serikat selama 8 (delapan) minggu.

Program ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris peserta, khususnya dalam English for Academic Purposes. Selain itu, peserta akan memiliki kesempatan untuk mempelajari secara langsung kebudayaan dan masyarakat Amerika Serikat karena peserta akan mengikuti program immersion dalam kelas internasional dimana mereka akan bergabung dengan peserta lain dari berbagai bangsa dan negara. Dalam program ini, peserta tidak hanya akan belajar Bahasa Inggris, namun juga akan mengikuti berbagai program kultural yang akan memberikan pengalaman yang sangat berharga.

2. Siapa yang berhak mendaftar?

IELSP terbuka untuk mereka yang berumur 19 – 24 tahun dan masih aktif sebagai mahasiswa S1 minimal tahun ketiga (semester 5 keatas) di perguruan tinggi mana pun di Indonesia dari berbagai jurusan. Pendaftar juga harus memiliki kemampuan Bahasa Inggris yang baik yang ditunjukkan dengan nilai TOEFL® baik International TOEFL® atau TOEFL® ITP minimal 450. Peserta terpilih juga harus bersedia untuk meninggalkan kuliah di tanah air selama 8 minggu karena akan mengikuti kursus intensif di Amerika Serikat selama waktu tersebut.

3. Apa saja persyaratannya?

-berumur 19 – 24 tahun, dan
-aktif sebagai mahasiswa S1 minimal tahun ketiga (semester 5 keatas) di perguruan tinggi manapun di seluruh Indonesia (BELUM DINYATAKAN LULUS/MENEMPUH SIDANG KELULUSAN)
-memiliki kemampuan Bahasa Inggris yang baik yang ditunjukkan dengan nilai TOEFL® baik International TOEFL® atau TOEFL® ITP minimal 450 (bukan Prediction Test)
-memiliki prestasi akademik yang baik
-aktif dalam berbagai kegiatan atau organisasi
-memiliki komitmen penuh untuk segera kembali ke tanah air segera setelah program ini selesai
-tidak memiliki pengalaman belajar di Amerika Serikat atau negara lain selain Indonesia
-memiliki sifat-sifat: aktif, mandiri, bertanggung jawab, percaya diri dan berpikiran luas.

4. Bagaimana cara mendaftar?

Untuk mendaftar, dapat mengambil formulir di kantor Indonesian International Education Foundation (IIEF), Menara Imperium Lt. 28 Suite B, Jl. HR Rasuna Said Kav 1, Jakarta 12980. Formulir juga dapat di-download dari website IIEF di http://www.iief.or.id/. Formulir boleh di fotokopi.

5. Dokumen apa saja yang harus disertakan dalam formulir pendaftaran?

Pendaftar harus melampirkan dokumen-dokumen berikut dalam formulir pendaftaran yang telah dilengkapi:

-1 (satu) buah pasfoto berwarna ukuran 4x6
-1 (satu) buah fotokopi Kartu Identitas (KTP)
-1 (satu) buah surat keterangan resmi dari universitas bahwa yang bersangkutan masih aktif terdaftar di universitas tersebut
-transkrip nilai dari semester 1
-1 (satu) buah fotokopi Ijazah SMA (tidak perlu diterjemahkan)
-1 (satu) buah fotokopi Surat Tanda Tamat Belajar (STTB) SMA (tidak perlu diterjemahkan)
-1 (satu) buah Surat Referensi dari dosen di universitas – menggunakan form khusus yang terlampir dalam Formulir Pendaftaran. Form Referensi yang telah dilengkapi harap dimasukkan kedalam amplop tertutup dan disertakan bersama Formulir Pendaftaran yang telah dilengkapi. Surat Referensi dari Dosen Matakuliah Bahasa Inggris lebih baik.

7. Kapan batas waktu pendaftaran?

Untuk Gelombang VI (terakhir), formulir yang telah dilengkapi dan disertai oleh dokumen persyaratan harus diterima oleh IIEF paling lambat tanggal 20 November 2008 .

8. Apakah saya harus sudah memiliki paspor dan visa Amerika Serikat sebelum mendaftar?

Seseorang tidak perlu sudah memiliki paspor dan visa Amerika Serikat untuk bisa mendaftar. Jika terpilih, peserta akan diberikan waktu untuk mengurus paspor. Visa Amerika Serikat akan diurus oleh IIEF sebelum keberangkatan. Perhatian: Penerima beasiswa dijadualkan untuk berangkat ke Amerika Serikat pada bulan April/Mei/Juni/Oktober 2009. (catatan: keputusan hasil seleksi tidak dapat diganggu gugat)

9. Apakah ada biaya tertentu yang harus saya bayar dalam program beasiswa ini?

Program ini merupakan beasiswa penuh, dan peserta tidak dipungut biaya apapun. Penerima beasiswa akan ditanggung seluruh biaya kecuali biaya pembuatan paspor.

Material Description of Tutorial Program

Daily English
Trainees are given the basics of English that is used in their daily life like how to greet, how to deliver an opinion, etc. They are conditioned as if in a conversation class. The aim of this meeting is to prepare them to actively use English if they are in ESo’s community and also to make them ready to follow the next stages of tutorial.
Trainer : Madlias, Satria, Kristian, Erlan, Eka, Balqis, Intan, Dimas.

Scrabble
Trainees are given the basic rules of how to play scrabble well, including the strategy to get high score and to beat their opponent. It is also aimed to train them to be ready to compete in a scrabble competition done by some English clubs around campus.
Trainer : Robby, Indah, Syauqi Wafa, Balqis, Arif, Nurkodri, Yudi, Dimas.

Story Telling
Trainees are asked to tell a story, whatever….it can be fairy tales, folk tales, jokes, etc. The training is focused on how the trainees can express and bring the story as if the story is in their real world. It is intended to prepare them mentally to follow some English competitions and to be brave speaking in front of mass. Ask them to prepare (including the property) and to learn the story one week before, then at the day of the meeting, you can just give them the strategy and ask them to practice with the story they have prepared before. It is very easy, isn’t it?

Speech 1
Give your trainees something about what speech is, what should be prepared in speech, how to make draft of speech, and how to deliver the speech well. We have prepared some module that you can use it later. In this Speech 1, the exercise that you have to do is to give them some themes, then ask them to present their ideas about the theme in front (2minutes or more, it’s up to you). Give them some constructive criticisms and then ask them to prepare a longer speech using the same theme at home (10 minutes). Ask them to prepare or to look for many matters or supporting information from all around the world about their speech that will be presented again in Speech 2. Perhaps you can call this speech 1 as presenting idea but just do your best and try to do this nice instruction.

How to be good student*
This tutorial will be given only for those who have 5 weeks in November. So, this is basically only enrichment for them. What should be given to the members is the strategy to do if they want to be successful both academically and non-academically.

Vocabulary (Spelling Bee)
Trainees are given the morphological concept of the arrangement of a word. The activities can be in form of spelling bee drilling, paper based task, and newspaper search. The department in charge will inform you and prepare the materials needed for the activity one week before hand.

Speech 2
This is the continuation of speech 1 tutorial. The beginning of the lesson can be watching a video of a speech through notebook. Ask the trainees to give judgment and criticism. Then, give feedback. Let them perform and conduct peer correction. Please do make sure that all of them have already understood and good at performing speech. (Remember you already give them task before to make the draft of the speech at the first meeting)

News Casting
Trainees are hoped to be able to have ability in presenting news. One week before meeting, ask them to cut an article in The Jakarta Post, then to practice it at home. At the day of the meeting, give them the theory of how we should present it in front well. If possible, show them a video. Give them chance to practice using their own materials. Comment what they have done and give constructive criticism one by one. Deliver some other cut articles that you have prepared before, deliver to them and ask them to present the news once more.

Debate 1
What you have to do at this meeting is to explain your trainees about the basics of debating. Explain them what debate is, why debate, and how to debate (general rules and guidelines to debating, speaking order in a debate, structure of a speech, roles in a debate, and points of information). If it’s possible, you may use a video, so that it will ease you to teach them how to debate. Focus on Asian Parliamentary. After explaining, try to simulate what you have given to them. Prepare a motion and ask them to debate.

Inspire yourself!! (Watching Movie)
This is the same as how to be a good student’s tutorial which an additional meeting. However, it is focused on the movie that is going to be watched. Trainees are asked to watch a movie and then by the end of the movie they are hoped can make a conclusion and retell the inspiring story given.

Debate 2
This is the continuation of Debate 1. What you have to do at this meeting is to explain your trainees about basics of debating. Explain them what debate is, why debate, and how to debate (general rules and guidelines to debating, speaking order in a debate, structure of a speech, roles in a debate, and points of information). If it’s possible, you may use a video, so that it will ease you to teach them how to debate. Focus on British Parliamentary. After explaining, try to simulate what you have given to them. Prepare a motion and ask them to debate.

Structure (TOEFL)
This is one of the sequences of TOEFL training conducted in this tutorial program. Firstly, give the trainees structure test usually met in TOEFL test. Let them do it and then discuss it together. Try to apply problem solving techniques.

Essay Writing
Trainees are asked to analyze an essay and judge the essay. Let them think the structure, the content, and also the way to make an essay interesting by looking at the essay they have. Give feedback and also the theory of how to make a good essay. Then, let them make an essay in a very limited time but still has to be good. Give them homework to prepare an essay for paper presentation.

Paper Presentation
The trainees will be asked to watch the trainer’s performance in presenting a paper. Then, they are asked to mention what to prepare and what aspects that should be carefully considered when they deliver their presentation. Give feedback and ask them to make a presentation.

Organization Management*
This tutorial will be given only for those who have 5 weeks in January. So, this is basically only enrichment for them. What should be given to the members is the history of ESo, the concept of management in general, and everything related to organization.

Listening (TOEFL)
This is one of the sequences of TOEFL training conducted in this tutorial program. Firstly, give the trainees listening test usually met in TOEFL test. Let them do it and then discuss it together. Try to apply problem solving techniques and tell them some strategies that may be applied.

Translation
This program will enrich the trainees in the theory of translation and interpreting both Indonesia to English and English to Indonesia. They are going to be drilled in translating 2 documents (English and Indonesia) and be given a feedback from the trainer after the strategy is given. Therefore, they are also going to practice how to be an interpreter in a very simple simulation.

Leadership Training
What should be given to the members is the history of ESo, the concept of leader in general, the way to organize an event, the way to prepare a proposal, etc.

Reading (TOEFL)
This is one of the sequences of TOEFL training conducted in this tutorial program. Firstly, give the trainees reading test usually met in TOEFL test. Let them do it and then discuss it together. Try to apply problem solving techniques and tell them some strategies that may be applied. Give them another test.

Internal Competition
This is as the closing of all tutorials given to the trainees. The competition will cover all the theories given. Each PIC will compete to win their group. There will be the announcement of outstanding trainee, outstanding trainer, outstanding PIC and also outstanding board of ESo.

1. Socialization of Tutorial Program and Getting to Know Each Other

This event was held on Saturday, November 1, 2008. The aim of the event is to socialize the tutorial program that will be done for next three months. Everything was nice, at least finally some of new members know what UKM-ESo is, the story of UKM-U ESo, the tutors, the boards, and the programs to do in ESo for this year. 2. Training of Scrabble and Debate

The training of scrabble was given by Robi on Saturday, November 8, 2008, one of the members of ESo who always win in many competition. We were given how to win a scrabble competition including the rules and the tricks. We had simulation then, and finally Tiya and Riska became the winner. Unfortunately, there was no price besides congratulation from Mr. Kristian. After battling in scrabble simulation competition, Mr. Madlias came and taught all of us debate. 3. SMAN 1 Kotagajah Debate Competition

A very nice competition to start learning how a debate competition is held and organized. It is done on Saturday, November 15, 2008. The members who will go there are Kristian, Hendra, Satria, Efelin, Ma'ruf, Myra, Mei, Dies, Berlinda. They will get different tasks. How crazy Kak Kristian is giving us many jobs this month!!! 4. The celebration of the third English Society Birthday in ESo's Homebase

It will be held on the 22nd of November, 2009. So please all ESoers, kindly note that all of us have to bring food that the price of the food is at least Rp. 5000. Wear black t-shirt and casual shoes. What we will do there is following some competition like Cap Guricap, Makan Kerupuk, Tarik Tambang, Watching Movie, etc. Keep contact with us. 5. New Member Selection

It will be done on Saturday, November 28, 2008 starting from 10:00 A.M. to 17:oo P:M. The materials of the test will be interview, written test, and performance test. All new members will be involved in the process of selection. PIC: Indah

The Profile of Our Leader

The first impression that you will get when you meet him is that he is born as a natural and real javanese. He is not like someone that we think as the boss. He likes being among us, knowing each of us and caring each individual as his own brother or sister. "An absolutely down to earth president", it's perhaps the most appropriate term that we can give to him. But anyway, this is no wonder I guess since he is the only child in his family, so he tries to find his sister and brother by himself rather than asking his parents to make it for him.

His full name is Kristian Adi Putra. Some of us usually call him "Kak Kristian", but sometimes "Kak Tian." But anyway he likes being called "Dear, My handsome leader." Later finally all of us know that this is the first knowledge that we get from this organization that we if already become ESo members are not allowed to be humble, low profile, and kind. Oh, how crazy it is! But we understand all of these are correct. We like listening to the way he is speaking because even if he has tried hard to speak in British and American Dialect, we will still know he is a javanese. Haha

Kak Kristian was born in gadingrejo, June 17, 1987. Even though his name is Krisian but actually he is a moslem. He also does not know why his name is Kristian. He still lives with his parents who work as an elementary school teacher. Without explaining that his parents are from java, I guess you already know that. Sometimes, we even see that he still speaks javanese in our beloved home base. And he promises us to give us the training of javanese for gobalization era. hehe, I do not want to come actually, but in order to make him happy, I will try to come even if I can not imagine how it will be.

He is actually a very ordinary man. We can see from the way he dresses. His hair is messy. His skin is an absolutely nice dark. Moreover, he is thin and tall. he is a very not good looking guy. yupz, now I guess you understand why in every ESo letter he always writes "Your handsome leader." Haha. He tries to praise himself because nobody does. Anyway we also finally try to do so, so that he will be happy and keep being among us.

Even if he is ordinary, he has many experiences and achievement that we need to know and learn. Anyway, he is great and like a room warmer for us when we're cold and an AC when we're feeling hot. Let's see his curriculum vitae.

What is UKM-U English Society of Lampung University?

English Society is the only university scoped English organization in Lampung University. English Society was established on November 24, 2005 by some UNILA’s students who were interested in English. ESo’s establishment was also based on the coordination and consolidation among English Club in Lampung University There are 4 departments within our organization, they are Education and Development Department, Public Relation and Financial Department, Administration and Homeland Security Department, Creativity and Art Department.

So far, English Society has made three reorganization, and the current organization structure is:
