Lampung Overland Various English Competition 2013

The most prestigious English competition for High School students in Lampung is back!

After successfully holding Lampung Overland Various English Competition 2012: “Truly Crazy Logic” by providing an opportunity for all high school students to compete with beyond-imagination idea, ESo Unila will challenge you again to join Lampung Overland Various English Competition 2013 with the theme of “Unifying Diversity”. By this theme, we want to gather both Senior and Junior High School students across Lampung with their own unique characters to be united and send the spirit of togetherness to the people. With 5 branches of competition namely Asian Parliamentary Debate, Scrabble, Storytelling, Speech, and News Casting, we welcome those who deserve to be the Champion!

1. DEBATE

LOVE-Comp Debate competition provides participants’ skills of public speaking and critical thinking, makes the debater great thinkers by responding current issues happening. We are going to implement Asian Parliamentary system which is nationally used, and adopted from international competition which has already been held before in this debate.

Competition Format

The competition is divided into 4 main rounds, consists of 3 Preliminary rounds, Quarterfinal round, Semifinal round, and Grand Final round. The debate consists of two teams which are the government team and the opposition team. Each speaker will be given 7 minutes to deliver their speech, and the reply speaker will be given 4 minutes.

2. SCRABBLE

Scrabble is a popular word game playing worldwide and measures how good your knowledge of vocabularies is. It also challenges you to apply your own strategies and to score as high possible. The player who has higher score is considered as the winner.

Competition Format

LOVE-Comp 2013 will have 3 Preliminary rounds all teams with Australian Draw pairing system (no repetition with the same opponent) on the first day. On the second day of competition we will have Octofinal round, Quarterfinal round, Semifinal round, and Grand Final round. We are going to adopt WESPA rules and CSW12 as the authority scrabble challenge in this competition.

3. SPEECH

Speech competition is an individual competition where the participants deliver their idea and convince the judges and the audiences. There will be 3 main rounds namely Preliminary round, Semifinal round, and Grand Final round. We will provide you some current issues for every round and it will be great if you keep in touch with several issues happened recently.

Competition Format

a.      Preliminary Round (Prepared Speech)

Every participant should deliver their own original speech based on the theme of “Unifying Diversity”. There will be a question from adjudicator. The participants will have 7 minutes and 20 seconds of extended time to deliver their speech. We also require participants to submit 3 hardcopies of their speech before Technical Meeting.

b.      Semifinal Round (Humorous Speech)

This is the time for participants to entertain the judges and the audiences. We challenge you to be creative and funny by delivering humorous speech. The content of the speech will be free but should be thematic in nature (has opening, body, and closing). The participants will have 7 minutes and 20 seconds of extended time to deliver their speech.

c.       Grand Final Round (Impromptu Speech)

The six participants will get the same topic and have 7 minutes of preparation. The maximum time of speech will be 7 minutes and 20 seconds of extension. There will be question and answer session for 3 minutes.

4. STORY TELLING

Storytelling competition is an individual competition where the participants show their creativity in visualizing any stories to the audiences in attractive and unique ways within a predetermined time. In this competition, each participant should show their abilities in telling a story and expressing the story within or without preparation. The participants are free to explore and discover ways to make the story become more interesting.

Competition Format

a.      Preliminary Round (Prepared Story)

The participants will perform their original story based on the theme of “Unifying Diversity”. The participants are allowed to bring their own properties to make the story become more interesting. Performing time in maximum is 7 minutes. The participants should prepare 3 hardcopies of their story and submit it before Technical Meeting.

b.      Semifinal Round (Amazing Clue)

The committee will give one clue taken by lottery to the participants after breaking announcement on the first day and the participants must use the amazing clue in their story by using their imagination and creativity. We will give 7 minutes for maximum time of performance. Every participant is allowed to bring their own properties.

c.       Grand Final Round (Magic Properties)

There will be about 10 properties prepared by the committee and the participants will get 3 properties randomly by taking a lottery. The participants are required to use all three properties in their story but not allowed to use the other than what we have prepared. The participants will have 3 minutes of preparation and 7 minutes of performance.

5. NEWS CASTING

News Casting competition is an extraordinary competition which develops skills in reading and presenting the news in professional ways. We challenge all of you to represent your school  to become a professional news anchor.

Competition Format

a.      Preliminary Round (News Reading)

Each participant will present 3 different news in maximum 5 minutes. The script will be prepared by the committee.

b.      Semifinal Round (Live Report)

Semifinalists have to present a live report in 5 minutes. The topic of the live report will be announced before the round is started. The committee will not provide any script during this round.

c.       Grand Final Round (News Reading and Interview)

Each participant has to present news and interview with a guest star prepared by the committee based on a certain topic in 10 minutes. Preparation in quarantine room will be 15 minutes.
